Sunshine Family Relationship Centre

The Sunshine Family Relationship Centre has been operating since July 2006. The Centre offers a range of services and programs, which are aimed at strengthening family relationships, helping families stay together, and assisting families through separation. The core purpose of the Centre is ensuring that the focus of parents is on the needs of their children.

The staff at the Sunshine Family Relationship Centre consists of:

  • administrators
  • family relationship advisors
  • family relationship dispute resolution practitioners
  • community development workers
  • centre manager

The Centre is overseen by a consortium that consists of Relationships Australia Victoria (lead agency), Centacare Catholic Family Services, MacKillop Family Services and Community West.  A number of programs and services are provided to the Centre by these agencies.

Relationships Australia Victoria provides ‘Groundwork’; ‘Reconnect’; and ‘Breakthrough’ (in partnership with Community West). Centacare provides Counsellors who work out of the Centre; ‘African Dad’s and Kids Community Program’; ‘Bringing Your Baby Home’; ‘Vietnamese Couple Relationship Program’; ‘Parenting across Cultures’. Community West offers ‘Parents Accepting Responsibility Kids Are Safe’ (PARKAS); ‘Breakthrough’ and ‘Smiling With Your Baby’.

Located in the western suburbs of Melbourne, the Centre has been established to assist people from a wide range of backgrounds. The staff at the centre bring with them a diverse range of skills, cultural backgrounds and experiences, so are able to provide relevant and sensitive services to the community. Amongst the staff are people from Lebanese, Indian, Vietnamese, Greek, Iranian, Indigenous and Sudanese backgrounds.

The Sunshine Family Relationship Centre also offers a range of information sessions and programs. For example the ‘Journeys of Separation’ information session is offered twice a week for those who are preparing to undertake family dispute resolution. Other information sessions are offered at various times throughout the year, for example an information session that offers advice to separated families on practical ways to manage conflict over the holiday and Christmas period, and, with Centacare, the ‘Our Kids’ Information Session.
